It blocks the effects of histamine and is generally less sedating than some older antihistamines, although dizziness or drowsiness can still occur. Check the active ingredient and strength on your own pack because products and formulations may differ.

Fexofenadine may relieve sneezing, an itchy or runny nose, itchy throat, itchy eyes and hives caused by histamine. Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with sneezing, nasal itching and watery discharge after exposure to triggers such as pollen, pets or house dust mites.

An antihistamine does not remove the trigger or cure the underlying allergy. It may also do little for marked nasal blockage, and it does not treat bacterial infection, asthma attacks or the dangerous airway effects of a severe allergic reaction.

Follow the dose and age directions on the label or prescription, swallow the medicine with water and do not double a missed dose. Avoid taking it with fruit juice because this can reduce absorption. Aluminium- or magnesium-containing indigestion remedies can also interfere, so ask a pharmacist how to separate them.

Check before use if you have kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, take other medicines, or are choosing a product for a child. Headache, nausea, dizziness or sleepiness can occur. Until you know your response, take care with driving or machinery and avoid combining antihistamines unless a clinician specifically advises it.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, severe breathing difficulty, collapse or faintness. Do not rely on an oral antihistamine when anaphylaxis is suspected; use prescribed emergency treatment according to the person's action plan while help is arranged.

Stop the medicine and obtain urgent advice if it appears to cause facial swelling, breathing trouble or a widespread blistering rash. Seek routine review when symptoms persist despite correct use, repeatedly disturb sleep, include wheezing, or make the diagnosis uncertain.

Confirm whether the symptoms fit allergy, whether fexofenadine suits your age and kidney function, and which formulation matches the intended dose. Ask about interactions, additional treatment for nasal blockage or eye symptoms, and whether persistent symptoms justify allergy testing or a prevention plan.
