All-over body rash with fever

The urgency depends on how unwell the person is and whether there are breathing problems, confusion, severe pain, purple spots, blisters, peeling skin or involvement of the eyes and mouth.

Viral illnesses can produce fever and a rash that spreads across the body; chickenpox commonly presents with crops of itchy spots that become fluid-filled blisters. A drug rash may begin after a new prescription, over-the-counter medicine or supplement, even when the product was taken as directed.

Cellulitis more often presents with a hot, painful and expanding area of redness than a uniform all-over eruption. Because appearance alone can mislead, a clinician also considers timing, exposures, vaccination history and other symptoms.

Contact a clinician the same day for advice. Record when the fever and rash started, where the rash first appeared, and all recently started medicines. A clear photograph in good light can document change, but it does not replace examination.

Rest, drink fluids if able, avoid overheating and do not share towels. Do not apply an unfamiliar cream or take leftover antibiotics. Before stopping an essential prescribed medicine, obtain urgent advice from the prescriber or emergency service unless a severe reaction is developing.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, collapse, confusion, unusual drowsiness, a stiff neck, a seizure, severe headache, or a purple or bruise-like rash that does not fade when pressed.

Immediate evaluation is also needed for rapidly spreading pain, blistering, skin peeling, sores around the mouth or eyes, inability to drink, or very little urine. Babies, pregnant people and anyone with weakened immunity should receive prompt clinical advice rather than waiting for the rash to settle.

Ask whether isolation is needed, whether any current medicine may be responsible, what fluids or fever relief are suitable, and which skin changes should bring you back immediately.
