Short answer

All-over itching in pregnancy deserves medical assessment, especially when there is no rash or the palms and soles are affected.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key clue
Itch may matter even when no rash is visible.
Comfort measure
Use cool compresses and unperfumed moisturiser.
Prompt review
Report itch involving the palms or soles.

The short answer

Skin stretching, dryness, eczema and contact irritation can all cause itching. However, widespread itch can sometimes reflect a pregnancy-related liver problem, so do not rely on the appearance of the skin alone.

What the pattern may mean

A visible dry, rough or inflamed rash points more toward a skin condition. Atopic dermatitis often presents with itching and inflamed patches, while hives cause raised welts that can move from place to place. A new soap, fragrance, fabric or topical product may trigger contact dermatitis.

Itching that is strongest at night, involves the palms or soles, and occurs without a primary rash needs prompt maternity review. Scratches may appear after rubbing, but they do not explain the original itch.

Steps you can take today

Contact your maternity team or clinician and describe where the itching began, whether it disturbs sleep, and whether a rash appeared before scratching. Mention every medicine, supplement and skin product you use.

Until assessed, choose lukewarm showers, loose breathable clothing, an unperfumed moisturiser and cool compresses. Avoid fragranced products and overheating. Check with a pregnancy-care professional before taking an antihistamine or applying a medicated cream.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent maternity advice for intense or rapidly worsening itch, itching on the palms or soles, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, upper abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. These features require assessment even if the skin looks normal.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Fever with a widespread rash, blistering, skin peeling, or sores around the eyes or mouth also needs urgent evaluation.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the distribution of itch suggests a skin disorder or a pregnancy-related cause, whether blood tests are appropriate, which moisturisers or medicines are suitable for your stage of pregnancy, and what change should trigger reassessment.

Questions people ask

Can pregnancy cause itching without a rash?

Yes. Skin changes can itch without a clear rash, but widespread or persistent itch without a rash should be discussed promptly with the maternity team.

Can I take an antihistamine while pregnant?

Some antihistamines may be used during pregnancy, but suitability depends on the medicine and your circumstances. Confirm the product with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first.

Does scratching harm the baby?

Scratching affects your skin rather than directly reaching the baby, but the cause of severe itching may need assessment for your health and the pregnancy.
