What should you know about all my nails are splitting?

Nails may peel in layers at the free edge, crack lengthwise, or break before growing long. When many nails change together, repeated water exposure, detergents, solvents, manicures, picking, or dry environments deserve attention. Less visible contributors can include iron deficiency, thyroid problems, inflammatory skin disease, or medicines that alter nail growth. Nail fungus can present with brittle or crumbling nails, often alongside thickening, discoloration, or debris beneath the nail, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Keep nails comfortably short and smooth rough edges with a fine file so they do not catch. Wear lined protective gloves for washing, cleaning, or prolonged wet work, and minimise direct contact with detergents and solvents. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser to nails and cuticles after handwashing and before sleep. Pause gel, acrylic, glue-on, and aggressive buffing routines while the nail plate recovers. Do not scrape beneath the nail or cut the cuticle, because both can damage the seal that helps block irritants and microbes.

Photograph the nails in consistent light and note new medicines, skin rashes, fatigue, dietary restriction, or heavy menstrual bleeding. This record can help a clinician decide whether examination, a nail sample, or blood testing is appropriate. Avoid taking iron or other high-dose supplements solely for nail splitting unless a deficiency has been identified.

Book an assessment if splitting persists despite gentle care, affects most nails, begins after a new medicine, or occurs with hair loss, marked tiredness, weight change, a persistent rash, or painful joints. Seek earlier care for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, significant tenderness, a dark streak that is new or widening, bleeding without clear injury, or separation of the nail from its bed. Sudden severe pain after trauma may need prompt evaluation even when the nail looks intact.

Ask whether the pattern suggests external damage, a skin condition, infection, or a problem affecting nail growth. Clarify whether clippings or scrapings are needed before using an antifungal treatment, which blood tests fit your other symptoms, and whether any current medicine could contribute. Bring a list of nail products and supplements as well as photographs showing how the changes developed.
