What should you know about alexandrite laser epilation?

Short answer

Alexandrite laser epilation reduces hair by heating melanin in suitable follicles, and it works better on pigmented hair than pale hair.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Epilation here means laser hair reduction, not the physical pulling of hair by an electric epilator. Suitability depends on the contrast between hair pigment and skin pigment, the body area, recent tanning and personal history of skin reactions.

What happens to the hair

Melanin in the hair absorbs the laser pulse and converts it to heat. The intended effect is controlled thermal injury to structures involved in growth while cooling helps protect the skin surface. Treated hairs may remain visible at first and then shed; this is different from continued active growth.

Follicles are not all in the same growth phase on a given day, so treatment is normally planned as a spaced course rather than a single visit. Hormonal influences, hair colour and treatment area can affect how much regrowth remains and whether maintenance is considered.

Before and after a session

Before the appointment, report any tan, rash, infection, tendency to form dark or light marks, and medicines that affect the skin or sensitivity to light. Do not wax, thread or pluck the planned area during the interval specified by the clinic; use its shaving guidance so the follicle still contains a target.

Keep treated skin cool and handle it gently afterward. Use the recommended moisturiser and broad-spectrum sun protection, and delay exfoliants, fragranced products, hot bathing and vigorous activity for as long as your clinician advises. Do not pick at small crusts or try to pull out shedding hairs.

When the reaction is not routine

Small follicle-centred bumps and limited redness can occur soon after treatment. Get advice from the clinic if these are worsening, unusually painful or slow to settle. Blistering, ulceration, pus, spreading warmth, pronounced swelling, or a notable colour change should be assessed promptly. Urgent care is appropriate for breathing problems or rapidly developing facial swelling.

Questions for a safe plan

Ask why alexandrite was selected for your skin and hair, how the practitioner adjusts for the body area, and what protective cooling and eyewear will be used. Request clear guidance on shaving, sun exposure and skincare between visits, plus an explanation of how progress and unwanted pigment changes will be documented.

Questions people ask

Is alexandrite epilation the same as waxing?

No. Waxing pulls hair from the follicle, whereas alexandrite treatment uses light absorbed by hair pigment to create heat in the follicle.

Why can hair still be visible after treatment?

A treated shaft may stay in the skin briefly before it sheds. The clinic can explain how to distinguish shedding from fresh growth without picking at the area.
