Aldara treatment for actinic keratosis

Actinic keratoses are rough or scaly areas caused by cumulative ultraviolet damage. Aldara contains imiquimod and may be applied across a defined field rather than dabbed only on each visible spot. This approach can address clinically visible changes and nearby altered skin. Redness, crusting, itching, tenderness, and shallow erosions can appear as immune activity develops, but reaction strength is not a reliable score of clearance.

Mark or photograph the treatment boundary if the clinician recommends it, and follow the application and washing instructions exactly. Keep the cream away from eyes, lips, and nostrils unless those edges were specifically included. Use gentle cleansing, avoid picking crusts, and check before adding exfoliants or active skincare. Shade, clothing, and suitable sunscreen help reduce further ultraviolet injury, but they do not replace scheduled skin examinations.

Speak with the clinic if pain is substantial, the treated field becomes extensively raw or weeping, sleep or daily function is disrupted, or flu-like symptoms develop. A lesion that becomes thick, tender, ulcerated, rapidly enlarges, or bleeds without clear trauma needs prompt assessment because it may require examination or sampling rather than continued topical treatment. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, or a widespread blistering rash.

Ask why imiquimod was chosen over freezing, photodynamic therapy, or another topical medicine; how large an area to treat; and what response would lead to a pause. Confirm when healed skin will be reassessed and whether any thicker or unusual lesion needs separate testing.
