Short answer

Alcohol can make the under-eye area look temporarily puffy by disrupting sleep, widening blood vessels, and altering fluid balance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Temporary swelling beneath both eyes after drinking or poor sleep
Simple measure
A cool compress over closed eyes may ease mild puffiness
Urgent sign
Vision change, severe pain, or breathing difficulty needs prompt care

Can alcohol cause puffy eyes?

The effect may be more noticeable after a salty meal, a late night, or sleeping flat. Puffiness after drinking does not by itself identify an allergy or an eye disease.

Why the eyelids may swell

Eyelid skin is thin, so small shifts in tissue fluid can change its appearance. Alcohol may contribute through dehydration followed by fluid retention, poorer sleep quality, and facial blood-vessel dilation. Rubbing tired or irritated eyes can add local inflammation.

Persistent fullness can have other explanations, including allergies, eyelid irritation, naturally prominent fat pads, drooping eyelid skin, or hollows that cast shadows. One-sided swelling, pain, or marked redness deserves a different assessment from mild puffiness under both eyes.

Practical steps for relief

Pause alcohol and drink water according to thirst. Rest with your head slightly raised, place a cool clean compress over closed eyes, and avoid rubbing or applying strongly fragranced products near the lids. A lower-salt meal may help if salt and alcohol occurred together.

Notice whether a particular drink, mixer, food, or skincare product repeatedly precedes swelling. If the puffiness remains after your usual routine has returned to normal, a clinician can distinguish temporary fluid retention from an eyelid or under-eye structural concern.

When puffy eyes need medical care

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, severe eye pain, reduced vision, double vision, fever with a red swollen eyelid, or an eye that appears pushed forward. These signs are not routine after-drinking puffiness.

Arrange a non-urgent appointment when swelling keeps returning, lasts despite avoiding alcohol, affects only one side, or comes with discharge, persistent itching, a new eyelid lump, or changes in vision.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask whether the pattern fits fluid retention, allergy, eyelid inflammation, drooping skin, or tear-trough anatomy. You can also ask which products are safe near your eyes and whether any medicines or health conditions could be contributing. Bring a photo taken during an episode if the swelling has settled before the visit.

Questions people ask

Will drinking water remove puffy eyes immediately?

Water supports normal hydration, but the appearance may not change immediately. Sleep, salt intake, irritation, and natural eyelid anatomy also affect how swollen the area looks.

Could recurring puffiness be caused by something other than alcohol?

Yes. Allergies, eyelid inflammation, rubbing, sleep disruption, drooping eyelid skin, and under-eye anatomy can contribute. Recurring or one-sided swelling should be assessed.
