What should you know about albino red eye?

The reddish or violet appearance can occur when light passes through an iris with little pigment and reflects from structures and blood vessels inside the eye. Many people with albinism instead have light blue, grey or brown irises. This optical appearance is different from bloodshot redness on the white surface of the eye.

A bloodshot eye develops when surface vessels become enlarged. Irritation, dryness, allergy, infection, an eyelid problem, an injury or a trapped particle can produce this change. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly presents with redness in both eyes, prominent itching and watering, while conjunctivitis can also cause discharge or lids that stick together.

Redness alone cannot identify the cause. Pain, sensitivity to light, discharge, vision change, contact-lens use, injury and whether one or both eyes are affected help a clinician decide what needs examination.

Avoid rubbing the eye and wash your hands before touching the eyelids. If loose dust or an irritant entered the eye, rinse gently with clean lukewarm water or sterile saline. A cool compress may soothe itching; preservative-free lubricating drops may help dryness. Do not share towels, eye drops or cosmetics.

Remove contact lenses when redness starts and leave them out until a clinician says they are safe to resume. Do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid eye drops, because the wrong treatment can mask or worsen some eye problems. People with albinism may also benefit from glare-reducing sunglasses and their prescribed vision correction.

Get urgent assessment for sudden loss or marked blurring of vision, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, a chemical splash, a penetrating injury, an irregular pupil, severe headache with nausea, or redness after eye surgery. After chemical exposure, begin continuous rinsing immediately while arranging emergency help.

A red eye in a contact-lens wearer also needs prompt professional advice because the cornea may be involved. Arrange a routine examination if redness or discharge persists, keeps returning, or is accompanied by eyelid swelling.

Ask whether the redness is on the eye surface or simply a light-related iris appearance, and whether the cornea is clear. You can also ask which lubricating drops are suitable, when contact lenses may be restarted, and whether light sensitivity or changing vision calls for updated glasses or a specialist review.
