What should you know about alat spirometer?

The word "alat" means device or instrument in Indonesian and Malay. During spirometry, you breathe through a mouthpiece connected to the spirometer. The test can help a clinician assess airflow, monitor a known lung condition or check how breathing responds to treatment.

The device records the volume of air you force out after taking a full breath and the amount expelled early in that breath. A clinician interprets the pattern alongside your age, height, symptoms, medical history and the quality of each attempt. One reading alone does not establish the cause of breathlessness.

You may repeat the test after using an inhaled medicine that opens the airways. A meaningful change can help the clinician understand whether narrowed airways respond to that medicine.

Follow the clinic's instructions about inhalers, smoking, large meals and strenuous exercise before the appointment; do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician specifically tells you to. Wear clothing that does not restrict your chest or abdomen and mention any recent chest infection, surgery, fainting or heart problem before testing.

For the measurement, sit or stand as directed, seal your lips firmly around the mouthpiece, inhale fully and then blow out as hard and as long as instructed. Several consistent efforts are usually needed because leaks, coughing or an early stop can distort the trace.

Seek emergency help for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, crushing chest pain or an inability to speak in full sentences. Do not delay urgent assessment to perform a home spirometer reading.

Contact a clinician promptly if breathlessness is new or worsening, wheeze repeatedly wakes you, you cough up blood, or your prescribed reliever is not working as expected. Stop a spirometry attempt and tell the tester if it causes marked chest pain, severe dizziness or faintness.

Ask what the measured airflow pattern suggests, whether your attempts met the test-quality checks, and how the result compares with any previous test. Also clarify whether you should change an inhaler, repeat spirometry when you are well, or have another assessment for your symptoms.
