Do not use leftover antibiotics, because an unsuitable medicine or schedule may fail to treat infection adequately.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden visual change, eye pain, new hearing loss, severe headache, weakness, difficulty walking, confusion, or a marked personality or memory change when syphilis is possible. Eye, ear, or nervous-system involvement may require a different investigation and antibiotic plan from uncomplicated infection.

Anyone who is pregnant and may have syphilis should contact a maternity or sexual health service promptly, even without symptoms, because assessment and treatment decisions should not wait for visible signs.

Ask which tests fit the timing of your possible exposure, whether repeat testing is needed, what stage is suspected, whether symptoms require eye, ear, or neurological assessment, when sexual contact can safely resume, and how partners can access confidential care.
