What to know about an airport PCR test

Airport testing may be offered before departure, after arrival, or both. Availability does not by itself confirm that the result will satisfy your airline, transit point, or destination.

PCR testing looks for genetic material from the virus that causes COVID-19, usually in a sample collected from the nose or throat. A positive result suggests current infection, while a negative result means the virus was not detected in that sample.

A negative result is not a promise that you are uninfected. Testing very early, a poorly collected sample, or exposure after sampling can affect what the result shows. Travel authorities may also distinguish between a laboratory PCR report and other COVID-19 tests.

Check the official requirements for your destination, airline, and any transit country before booking. Confirm the permitted sample window, test type, approved testing provider, report language, and whether the certificate must include passport details or a QR code.

Bring the identification used for your booking and allow enough time for registration, sample collection, laboratory processing, and document checks. Keep the result accessible in the required format. If the airport service cannot return it within your travel window, arrange testing earlier with an accepted provider.

Do not rely on airport testing as a substitute for care when you feel seriously unwell. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or unusual difficulty staying awake.

If you have milder respiratory symptoms or a known exposure, reduce close contact with others and follow current local public-health instructions. Contact a clinician for specific advice if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, have a long-term condition, or your symptoms are worsening.
