What should you know about air next spirometer?

It is used during spirometry, usually with connected software that records and displays the breathing manoeuvre. The reading depends heavily on technique, so a clinician should explain how to inhale fully, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and exhale with a strong, sustained effort.

Spirometry records the volume of air exhaled and the speed of airflow. Clinicians assess the shape and repeatability of the attempts as well as the measured values. Results may help identify an obstructive or restrictive pattern, monitor an established lung condition, or assess response to treatment.

A spirometer does not establish a diagnosis by itself. Interpretation considers age, height, sex, symptoms, medical history, test quality, and sometimes readings taken before and after an inhaled bronchodilator. An unusual result may reflect a breathing problem, incomplete effort, coughing, a loose mouth seal, or stopping too early.

Follow the clinic's instructions about inhalers, meals, smoking, exercise, and clothing before the test. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician specifically tells you to do so. Use a clean, compatible mouthpiece and make sure the device and connected software are ready before starting.

Sit or stand as directed, inhale until your lungs feel completely full, close your lips firmly around the mouthpiece, then blast the air out and continue until told to stop. Several acceptable attempts may be needed. Report dizziness, chest discomfort, severe coughing, or difficulty completing the manoeuvre. Home readings should be shared in the format requested by your care team.

Do not delay urgent care to repeat a spirometry reading. Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, new crushing chest pain, inability to speak comfortably because of breathlessness, or a severe breathing reaction after exposure to a possible allergen.

Contact a clinician promptly if wheeze, cough, chest tightness, or shortness of breath is new, worsening, disturbing sleep, or limiting usual activity. A normal-looking home result does not override concerning symptoms, and a single low reading should be checked for technique and interpreted in clinical context.

Ask which measurements matter for your care, whether your attempts met quality checks, and how the readings compare with your previous tests. Clarify whether inhalers should be used before future testing, how often home measurements should be recorded, what change should trigger contact, and how the device should be cleaned and stored.
