Aircast boots for a foot fracture

Foot fractures differ across the toes, metatarsals, midfoot and hindfoot. Treatment may range from a stiff-soled shoe or boot to a cast, reduction or surgery. Examination and imaging are needed before choosing among them.

A boot reduces motion and shields the injured area while bone repairs. Its removable design can make authorised skin checks and hygiene easier, but removal at the wrong time may expose the fracture to movement. A traditional cast provides more fixed restraint and may be preferred when compliance, alignment or injury complexity calls for it.

Being given a walking boot does not automatically mean full weight-bearing is allowed. Some foot bones tolerate load differently, and a clinician may prescribe no weight, partial weight or weight as tolerated with a walking aid.

Position the heel at the back of the liner and fasten straps in the sequence shown by the clinic. They should hold the foot without creating tingling, colour change or a pressure point. Keep the boot dry unless its instructions state otherwise, and never place objects inside to scratch the skin.

Rest from activities that provoke pain, elevate the foot when swollen and use crutches as directed. Do not test the fracture by walking farther because it feels better. Keep every review appointment; the team may adjust fit, repeat imaging and later introduce foot movement, strengthening and gait work.

Obtain urgent care for an open wound over the injury, obvious new deformity, toes that turn blue or pale, a cold foot, loss of feeling, inability to move the toes, or severe escalating pain. Fever with spreading redness or drainage may signal infection. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain is also an emergency.

Request an earlier clinic check if the liner causes a blister, the boot becomes wet or cracked, swelling prevents correct fitting, or pain returns after another impact. Do not pad a persistent pressure area without professional guidance because extra material can shift pressure elsewhere.

Ask for the name and location of the broken bone, whether it is displaced, and the exact weight-bearing instruction. Confirm when the boot may be removed, how often skin should be inspected, what follow-up is required and when physiotherapy or a transition to supportive footwear may begin.
