What should you know about AI anastrozole?

It is taken by mouth and may be used after surgery, for cancer that has spread, or in another treatment plan chosen for the tumour's hormone-receptor status and the patient's hormonal circumstances. AI in this setting means aromatase inhibitor; it does not mean artificial intelligence.

Aromatase helps the body make oestrogen outside the ovaries. Blocking this enzyme reduces oestrogen stimulation of cancers that depend on the hormone for growth. Anastrozole is commonly considered after menopause. A person whose ovaries are still functioning may need ovarian suppression or a different hormonal approach, so menopausal status and current medicines matter.

Common concerns include hot flushes, joint or muscle discomfort, tiredness, vaginal dryness, and changes in bone strength. The care plan may therefore include attention to bone health, exercise suited to your condition, and review of other fracture risks.

Take anastrozole exactly as prescribed and at a consistent time. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions from your prescriber or pharmacist rather than doubling the next dose. Tell the oncology team about all prescription medicines, supplements, pregnancy possibility, previous fractures, osteoporosis, and heart or cholesterol problems. Do not stop because of joint pain or hot flushes before discussing symptom-control options and treatment alternatives.

Contact the treating team promptly about severe or persistent side effects, a new fracture, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or symptoms that interfere with walking and daily tasks. Get emergency help for chest pressure, sudden breathlessness, swelling of the face or throat, a severe spreading rash, or signs of stroke such as new one-sided weakness or difficulty speaking.
