AHA skin booster: what to know before treatment

“AHA skin booster” is not a precise description of one universal procedure. AHA commonly describes alpha hydroxy acids used on the skin, while the term skin booster often refers to small injections intended to improve hydration and skin texture. Some injectable products contain hyaluronic acid, but formulas and regulatory status differ. Ask to see the exact product name and ingredient list rather than relying on the marketing label.

Skin boosters are not the same as volumising dermal filler, and they do not erase every line, scar or area of sun damage. The likely result depends on the formulation, injection depth, treatment area and your skin.

Choose a clinician licensed to assess skin and perform injections in the UAE. Share your medicines, allergies, previous filler or skin treatments, tendency to cold sores, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any immune or bleeding condition. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the prescriber advises it. Treatment should be postponed if the planned area has an active infection, open wound or inflamed rash.

Small bumps, redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising can follow injections. Follow the clinician’s written aftercare, keep the area clean and avoid pressing or massaging it unless specifically instructed. Ask when makeup, exercise, heat exposure and other facial treatments can safely resume for the product used.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if redness, warmth, pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop pus, fever, spreading skin changes or persistent lumps. These findings need assessment for infection or another treatment reaction.

Seek urgent medical care after an injection for severe or escalating pain, pale or mottled skin, dusky discoloration, blistering, sudden visual change, facial weakness, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue. These symptoms may indicate impaired blood flow, a serious allergic reaction or another urgent complication.

Ask: What is the product’s full name and what does it contain? Is it injected or applied to the skin? Is it authorised for this use in the UAE? Who will perform the procedure? What change is realistic for my concern? Which reactions are expected, and whom should I contact after hours? Also request a plan for managing complications before you consent.
