Using AHA, BHA and hyaluronic acid together

Many people do not need AHA and BHA at the same application. Alternating them or choosing one ingredient for a defined concern can make the routine easier to tolerate. Hyaluronic acid supports hydration but does not neutralise either exfoliant.

AHA ingredients such as glycolic or lactic acid work mainly at the skin surface. BHA usually refers to salicylic acid, which can help clear oily material within pores. Topical hyaluronic acid binds water at the skin surface and is used for hydration rather than exfoliation.

A bottle labelled hyaluronic acid is not the same treatment as a hyaluronic acid injection placed into a joint. The topical product belongs in skin care; the injection is a clinical procedure considered for particular joint symptoms.

Test each product separately on a small area so that a reaction has an identifiable cause. Begin with one exfoliant at a low frequency according to its label. If it remains comfortable, decide whether a second acid is actually needed rather than adding it automatically.

Apply a plain moisturiser after a hyaluronic-acid serum if that suits the product instructions. Choose gentle cleansing and broad-spectrum sun protection, and pause scrubs or additional peels. A person using a prescription retinoid, acne medicine or treatment for rosacea should confirm the routine with their clinician.

Wash the products off and stop using them if discomfort becomes more than brief mild tingling. Blisters, significant swelling, raw skin, crusting or a spreading rash warrant prompt medical advice. Breathing trouble, throat tightness, faintness or swelling around the mouth or eyes requires urgent care. Persistent discoloration or repeated flares should be assessed by a dermatologist.

Bring the ingredient lists of every active product. Ask which acid addresses your main concern, how to separate it from prescription products, and whether eczema, very dry skin, a recent peel or waxing changes the plan. Also ask how long to pause products after irritation before considering a careful restart.
