What should you know about age spots under eyes?

A true sun spot is usually a defined, flat area of pigment on skin exposed over time. Diffuse darkness following the lower eyelid contour may instead come from skin colour, visible vessels, facial structure or rubbing. An examination is the safest starting point before using a pigment treatment close to the eye.

A single mark with a clear edge differs from symmetrical under-eye shading. Raised texture, scale or recurrent itch suggests that the change needs a different evaluation from an uncomplicated flat sun spot. Pigment can also remain after eczema, cosmetic irritation or frequent rubbing.

Because eyelid skin is thin, a spot can appear more prominent than a similar mark elsewhere. Its appearance does not reveal its cause reliably, and not every brown lesion should be lightened or removed.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection suited to the face, add sunglasses and a hat, and avoid rubbing itchy eyelids. Stop any cosmetic that triggers burning, swelling or scaling. Keep exfoliating acids and non-eye-formulated lightening creams away from the eyelid margin and the eye itself.

A dermatologist can decide whether observation, a carefully selected topical product or a procedure is appropriate. Chemical peels, intense pulsed light, pigment lasers and freezing all have location-specific limits near the eye; trained eye protection and an exact diagnosis are essential when an energy device is considered.

Arrange a prompt skin examination if a spot enlarges, changes shape or colour, develops an uneven border, bleeds, crusts or fails to heal. Urgent care is appropriate for sudden eyelid swelling with eye pain, impaired vision, marked redness of the eye or difficulty moving it.

Ask whether the colour is within the skin or partly a structural shadow, which products are safe at that distance from the eye, and what improvement is realistic. For a procedure, discuss protective measures, the chance of lighter or darker pigment afterward, and who will manage eye-area complications.
