What should you know about age spots under armpits?

Classic age spots, also called solar lentigines, are linked to accumulated light exposure and are therefore less typical in a consistently covered skin fold. A clinician can distinguish a flat pigment change from a mole, rash or thickened patch before cosmetic treatment is considered.

Repeated rubbing, shaving, deodorant irritation or a previous rash can leave post-inflammatory pigmentation. A velvety, broader area of darkening is different from a sharply outlined flat spot and deserves assessment for an underlying cause. Colour alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Notice whether the change affects both armpits, whether the surface is smooth or thickened, and whether there is itching, scale, soreness or a lump. These details help separate pigment left after irritation from an active skin problem.

Pause any new fragranced deodorant or harsh lightening product if it stings, and reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing. Do not apply strong acids, bleach mixtures or unprescribed steroid creams to the fold; this skin can become irritated and pigmentation may worsen.

Photograph the area in consistent lighting and arrange a skin check if it persists. Procedures such as peels, light devices, pigment lasers or cryotherapy suit only selected diagnoses and skin types, so treatment should follow an examination rather than a home assumption that the mark is an age spot.

Seek prompt medical review for a mark that is new and rapidly changing, has an irregular outline or several colours, bleeds, crusts, becomes persistently painful, or forms a firm lump. Widespread thick, velvety darkening or similar changes on the neck or groin also warrants a routine medical assessment.
