Age spots on fingers: identification and sensible care

Repeated ultraviolet exposure contributes to solar lentigines, especially on the backs and sides of the fingers. Their location alone cannot confirm what a mark is.

A conventional age spot is smooth, flat, and fairly uniform in colour. Darkening over a knuckle can instead relate to friction or inflammation, while pigment beside or beneath a nail deserves separate attention because the nail unit has its own set of possible conditions.

Hand eczema, minor injuries, bites, and contact with irritants can leave a darker trace after the skin heals. A clinician considers whether the mark followed inflammation, whether it crosses onto the nail, and whether its outline has changed.

Extend broad-spectrum sunscreen from the backs of the hands over the fingers, and reapply after washing when exposure continues. Protective gloves can reduce sun and chemical contact during driving, outdoor work, or household tasks, depending on the material and activity.

Do not scrape, cut, or apply wart remover to a presumed age spot. After assessment, options may include a topical treatment, carefully selected freezing, a peel, or laser-based care. The thin contours around finger joints and the tendency to wash products away can affect both technique and aftercare.

Have a clinician inspect a mark that enlarges, becomes uneven in colour or border, develops a lump or scale, bleeds, hurts, or fails to heal. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for a new dark streak in a nail, pigment spreading onto nearby skin, or unexplained nail distortion.

Swelling, warmth, pus, or increasing pain around a treated spot may indicate infection and should be evaluated. Keep the area clean and avoid further home treatment while awaiting advice.

Ask whether the mark comes from sun exposure, inflammation, the nail unit, or another process. If removal is considered, ask how treatment will protect movement at the joint, how to care for skin exposed to frequent washing, and when you can resume work involving water or chemicals.
