Age spot on the nose: what matters

The nose receives substantial ultraviolet exposure and also develops freckles, inflamed pores, rough sun-related lesions and other pigmented growths. Examine a persistent or unfamiliar mark before trying to freeze, peel or fade it.

An age spot is commonly flat and tan to brown, with a defined outline. A rough surface, recurrent scale, a pearly appearance, a sore or visible growth does not fit that simple description and requires clinical evaluation.

Nose skin curves around the bridge, tip and nostrils, so lighting can distort how a border or colour looks in a mirror. A dermatologist can inspect the surface and pigment pattern directly and decide whether further assessment is necessary.

Cover the bridge, sides and tip of the nose with broad-spectrum sunscreen, then add a hat and shade. Reapply after the product has rubbed off through sweating, wiping or contact with glasses.

Do not use home freezing kits, sharp tools or caustic acids near the nostrils or eyes. Once the diagnosis is established, a dermatologist may discuss a topical lightener, controlled freezing, a peel, intense pulsed light or a laser. Treatment must account for the thin contours of the area, healing response and risk of a lighter or darker patch.

Seek assessment if the mark grows, changes colour or outline, becomes raised, forms persistent scale, repeatedly crusts, bleeds with little contact, hurts, itches continuously or turns into a sore that does not heal. A spot that changes after initially looking stable also merits review.

Following a procedure, obtain prompt advice for bleeding that will not settle with gentle pressure, marked swelling around the eye, worsening pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever or tissue that appears severely damaged. Avoid applying additional active products while awaiting guidance.

Ask how confidently the mark can be identified, whether its surface needs closer examination, and which treatment avoids nearby eyes and nostrils. Mention glasses, masks, skin sensitivity, previous scarring and any tendency for wounds to leave dark or pale marks. Clarify wound care before agreeing to a procedure.
