What should you know about after water breaks how long?

The plan depends on how many weeks pregnant you are, whether labour has started, the baby's wellbeing, the fluid's colour and whether there are signs of infection. Do not stay home waiting for a fixed number of hours without speaking to a maternity professional.

The waters break when the fluid-filled sac around the baby opens. Fluid may arrive as a gush or a continuing trickle that cannot be controlled like urine. Contractions may already be present, may begin later, or may not start on their own.

Once the membranes have opened, the maternity team considers infection risk and checks whether the pregnancy is at term. Preterm labour can present with waters breaking early and requires assessment because care differs before term.

Note when the leaking began and observe the fluid's colour, smell and approximate amount. Use a maternity pad rather than a tampon, avoid sex, and call your maternity unit even if contractions have not started.

Follow the unit's instructions about coming in. Bring your pregnancy notes if available. While awaiting assessment, pay attention to the baby's usual movements and avoid putting anything into the vagina.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for green, brown, heavily blood-stained or unpleasant-smelling fluid, fever, feeling unwell, constant abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, reduced baby movement or waters breaking before term.

Call emergency services if you can feel or see the umbilical cord, have severe bleeding, collapse, or feel an uncontrollable urge to push without safe transport. Do not touch or push back a visible cord.

Ask how the team will confirm membrane rupture, how the baby's heartbeat and your temperature will be monitored, and what happens if labour does not begin. If the pregnancy is preterm, ask what monitoring and medicines may be considered.
