What to Expect After Vaginoplasty

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and light blood-stained discharge can occur early in healing. Your operation type determines whether you need vaginal dilation, packing, a catheter or specific washing instructions, so use the plan supplied by your surgical team.

Discomfort should become more manageable rather than steadily worsening. Sensation can feel numb, unusually sensitive or uneven while swelling settles and nerves recover. The appearance of the vulva and vaginal opening also changes during healing, so the early result is not the final appearance.

Bowel movements may initially feel uncomfortable because straining puts pressure on the surgical area. Fluids, fibre and any prescribed bowel medicine can help you avoid constipation.

Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and keep the area clean and dry using the method your team demonstrated. Wash your hands before wound care or dilation, use only approved products, and attend planned follow-up visits.

Build activity up gradually. Avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, penetrative sex and inserting anything other than a prescribed dilator until your surgeon clears these activities. If dilation is part of your care, follow the specified size, depth, frequency and lubrication guidance; forcing the dilator can injure healing tissue.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, heat, swelling, foul-smelling discharge, fever, a wound that opens, difficulty passing urine, or pain that is getting worse despite medication. New calf pain or swelling also needs urgent assessment.

Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or sudden confusion. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask when dressings, packing or a catheter should be removed; how to clean the area; which changes are expected; and who to contact outside clinic hours. Confirm your personal schedule for dilation, exercise, bathing, driving, work and sexual activity.
