What to Do After Travel Sickness

Short answer
After travel sickness, rest somewhere still, take small sips of fluid, and seek care if symptoms persist or warning signs develop.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Rest away from motion and replace fluids gradually
- Food
- Restart with small amounts once nausea has eased
- Safety
- Do not drive while dizzy or drowsy from medicine
Why symptoms may linger
Travel sickness occurs when motion signals from the inner ear do not match what the eyes see. Nausea, sweating, dizziness, headache, or vomiting may continue briefly after the journey ends while those signals settle. Symptoms that begin well after travel, continue to worsen, or occur with diarrhoea, fever, severe pain, or neurological changes may have another cause and should not automatically be attributed to motion.
Helping your body recover
Sit or lie in a quiet, well-ventilated place and limit reading, scrolling, and rapid head movement. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink rather than taking a large amount at once. When nausea eases, try a small portion of plain food and gradually return to usual meals. Avoid driving or operating machinery while dizzy, drowsy, or affected by motion-sickness medicine. Check medicine labels before taking another dose because some products cause sleepiness or overlap with other ingredients.
Signs that need medical attention
Get medical advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down, dizziness continues after the motion has stopped, symptoms recur without travel, or you notice signs of dehydration such as very dark urine, passing little urine, a dry mouth, or unusual weakness. Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, a new severe headache, chest pain, difficulty breathing, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, blood or green fluid in vomit, or severe abdominal pain.
Planning for future journeys
Tell your clinician which type of travel triggers symptoms, how soon they start, whether you vomit, and what medicines or health conditions you have. Ask which preventive option suits you, when it should be taken, whether it may cause drowsiness, and whether persistent dizziness needs an ear or neurological assessment.

Questions people ask
Why do I still feel sick after leaving the vehicle?
The brain may need a little time to readjust after motion stops. Continued or worsening symptoms, especially without further movement, merit medical advice.
What should I drink after vomiting from travel sickness?
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Large drinks can provoke more nausea, so increase the amount gradually as your stomach settles.
Can I take more motion-sickness medicine after the trip?
Follow the product instructions and check the active ingredients first. A pharmacist or clinician can advise if you use other medicines, have a long-term condition, or remain unwell.
