What happens after an embryo transfer?

You can usually return to ordinary gentle activities. The embryo cannot fall out through walking, using the toilet or changing position, and prolonged bed rest is generally unnecessary unless your fertility team has given a specific medical reason.

Mild cramping, bloating, breast tenderness, discharge or light spotting can occur after transfer. These feelings may come from the procedure or hormone medicines, so their presence or absence cannot tell you whether implantation has happened.

Testing early can be misleading because medication used earlier in treatment may affect a result, while pregnancy hormone may not yet be detectable. The clinic's planned test date is chosen to give a clearer answer. Bleeding before that date does not replace the scheduled test.

Take progesterone and any other prescribed treatment exactly as directed, even if you spot or think a period has started. Do not change the dose or stop treatment unless the fertility team tells you to do so. Check with the clinic before starting non-prescription medicines or supplements.

Eat normally, drink enough fluid and keep activity comfortable. Follow any personalised restrictions on strenuous exercise, sex, bathing, work or travel because advice may reflect how the cycle went and whether your ovaries remain enlarged. On test day, use the method supplied or requested and report the result to the clinic.

A positive result usually leads to medication instructions and an early ultrasound appointment. After a negative result, contact the team before stopping medicines and ask about follow-up, emotional support and when future options can be discussed.

Contact the fertility clinic promptly for increasing abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, vomiting, reduced urination, rapid abdominal swelling, breathlessness or feeling generally unwell. These symptoms need assessment rather than interpretation as signs of implantation.

Seek emergency care for severe pain, sharp pain mainly on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, difficulty breathing or bleeding that quickly soaks a pad. Continue to take a positive test with pain or bleeding seriously until a clinician has confirmed where the pregnancy is developing.

Confirm the exact test date and method, how you should report the result, and which medicines continue after either outcome. Ask whom to call outside clinic hours, whether your cycle creates any specific activity limits, and when an ultrasound would be arranged after a positive result.
