Treatment clears the infection, but antibodies can remain detectable, so a blood test may not simply become negative. Clinicians compare follow-up results with the result taken around treatment to judge the response. The timing depends on the stage of infection, the medicine used, pregnancy, symptoms, and immune health.

Treatment does not provide immunity. A person can acquire syphilis again after another exposure, even after an appropriate response to antibiotics.

Attend every scheduled blood test and keep a record of the treatment date and medicine. Tell the clinic if a dose was delayed or missed. Recent sexual partners need confidential notification, testing, and sometimes treatment even if they feel well.

Follow the clinician's instructions about when sexual contact can resume; this usually depends on treatment being completed, sores being healed, and partners being managed. Condoms reduce exposure but may not cover every infectious sore. Ask for STI screening suited to your exposures, including testing discussed for HIV and other infections.

Fever, chills, headache, or muscle aches can occur soon after the first antibiotic dose as the bacteria break down; contact your clinician if symptoms are severe or you are pregnant. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash after medicine.

Arrange urgent assessment for new vision or hearing changes, severe headache, weakness, confusion, balance problems, or returning sores or rash. These features may require examination and a different follow-up plan.

Confirm the stage of infection, the dates for repeat blood tests, the expected change in results, and how you will receive reminders. Ask which partners should be contacted, when sex can resume, and what to do if another exposure occurs.
