After a stereotactic breast biopsy

Mild soreness, bruising, and a small firm area can occur as the tissue heals. Your clinic's discharge instructions take priority because dressings and closure methods differ.

Stereotactic guidance uses mammogram images to direct a needle to an area that may not be felt. Bruising or a temporary lump after sampling can reflect local bleeding and healing rather than the biopsy result. The laboratory report describes the sampled tissue; having a biopsy does not itself mean breast cancer is present. Sometimes imaging and pathology findings need further review together before the next recommendation is made.

Keep the dressing clean and dry for the period stated on your discharge sheet. A wrapped cold pack placed over clothing for short intervals may ease swelling; do not put ice directly on skin. Wear a supportive bra if comfortable, and avoid strenuous upper-body activity or heavy lifting until the clinic says it is suitable. Use only pain relief that the procedure team has said is appropriate, especially if you take medicines that affect bleeding.

Apply firm, steady pressure and contact the biopsy team promptly if bleeding soaks through the dressing or does not settle. Seek clinical advice for worsening redness, warmth, swelling, increasing pain, pus-like drainage, fever, or a rapidly enlarging breast. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, faintness, or severe weakness. Do not remove closure strips or probe the wound while checking it.

Confirm when and how results will arrive, who will explain them, and what to do if you have not been contacted. Ask whether the tissue result matches the imaging finding and whether you need surveillance imaging, another biopsy, or breast lump excision. If a marker clip was placed, ask for that detail to be recorded for future imaging.
