Pregnancy after rubella vaccination

The MMR vaccine contains weakened live viruses and is not given during a known pregnancy because of a theoretical concern for the developing baby. This precaution is different from rubella infection itself, which can harm a pregnancy. Vaccination shortly before or during an unrecognised pregnancy is not, by itself, considered a reason to end the pregnancy.

Use reliable contraception during the 28-day waiting period. Keep the vaccine record, including the product and date. If a pregnancy test becomes positive within that interval, or the vaccine was given during pregnancy, contact the maternity or primary-care team so they can confirm timing, explain the theoretical concern and arrange routine pregnancy care.

Do not request another MMR dose while pregnant. If immunity or dose history is uncertain, let the clinician review the vaccination record and decide whether any testing or a later dose is appropriate. MMR can generally be given after delivery when indicated, including while breastfeeding.

Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant and develop a rash or fever, or if you have been close to someone with confirmed or suspected rubella. Mild fever, a temporary rash, swollen glands or joint discomfort can occur after vaccination, but symptoms still deserve individual advice during pregnancy. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse or another sign of a severe allergic reaction.

Ask the clinician to confirm which vaccine you received, the date the waiting period ends and whether your pregnancy dates overlap it. If vaccination occurred after conception, ask what follow-up is appropriate and whom to contact with new symptoms. Also check which vaccines are recommended during the pregnancy and which should wait until after delivery.
