Spotting After Your Period: What It May Mean

A small amount of brown discharge may be older blood leaving the uterus. New red bleeding, repeated episodes, bleeding after sex, or a change from your usual cycle gives a clinician more reason to investigate.

Cycle timing can shift with hormonal changes, starting or stopping hormonal contraception, missed pills, stress, or the transition toward menopause. Spotting can also come from irritation of the cervix or vagina, an infection such as chlamydia, or growths such as endometrial polyps or uterine fibroids.

Less commonly, cervical or womb abnormalities can present with unexpected bleeding. Spotting alone cannot identify the cause, and its colour does not reliably distinguish a harmless explanation from one that needs treatment. Pregnancy-related bleeding is another consideration when pregnancy is possible.

Record when the spotting starts, its colour and flow, whether it follows sex, and any pain, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or missed period. Note contraception, missed doses, recent procedures, and medicines that can affect bleeding. This pattern helps a clinician choose appropriate checks.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test at the appropriate time for the product and seek clinical advice about any bleeding. Arrange a routine appointment when spotting continues, returns across cycles, begins after menopause, or follows sex. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, a pelvic examination, cervical screening review, or ultrasound depending on your history.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, severe or worsening pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever with pelvic pain, or bleeding during a possible or confirmed pregnancy. These features can signal significant blood loss, infection, or a pregnancy complication and should not wait for a routine visit.

After menopause, any vaginal bleeding should be assessed promptly even when it is light or happens only once.

Ask whether your contraception or medicines could affect bleeding, whether pregnancy or infection testing fits your situation, and whether an examination, cervical screening review, or ultrasound is appropriate. Also ask what change in flow, pain, or cycle pattern should trigger earlier follow-up.
