When can pregnancy happen after a missed miscarriage?

Trying again is generally considered after treatment or expectant care is complete, concerning symptoms have resolved and you feel ready. Individual advice may differ when tissue remains, infection is suspected or another condition needs treatment.

In a missed miscarriage, a pregnancy has stopped developing but bleeding and cramping may be absent or mild. Recovery may be managed by waiting, medicine or a procedure, and the point at which it is complete depends on that pathway.

Pregnancy hormone falls gradually after the loss. A home test can therefore remain positive during recovery and does not by itself show that a new pregnancy has begun.

Complete the follow-up recommended by your maternity or gynaecology team. Use contraception until you want pregnancy, and begin folic acid before trying to conceive.

Check prescribed and non-prescribed medicines for pregnancy suitability. Give yourself permission to wait if grief or anxiety feels overwhelming; physical fertility and emotional readiness do not always return together. A new positive test can be discussed with your clinician so appropriate early care can be planned.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, chills, unpleasant-smelling discharge, shoulder-tip pain or marked weakness. These signs need prompt assessment for bleeding, infection or pregnancy outside the uterus.

Book a non-urgent review if bleeding continues without improvement, the follow-up pregnancy test remains positive when your team expected it to clear, or menstruation does not resume. Persistent distress, intrusive memories or difficulty managing daily life also deserves clinical support.
