How long after losing the mucus plug will your waters break?

Your waters may break soon afterward, later during labour, or before contractions begin. Some people notice their mucus plug coming away in one piece, while others lose it gradually and may not recognise it.

The mucus plug sits in the cervix during pregnancy. As the cervix softens or begins to open, the plug can pass as thick, sticky, clear, pink, or lightly blood-streaked mucus, often called a show. This suggests the body is preparing for labour but does not provide a countdown.

Waters breaking means the fluid-filled membranes around the baby have ruptured. Fluid may appear as a gush or a continuing trickle that you cannot control. It can be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine, so contact your maternity unit if you are uncertain.

If you have only noticed the mucus plug and otherwise feel well, follow the labour guidance given by your maternity team. Keep track of contractions, fetal movement, and any fluid loss. Have your maternity notes and contact details ready, because labour may still begin without the waters breaking first.

If you suspect your waters have broken, note the time, colour, smell, and amount of fluid. Use a clean maternity pad rather than a tampon, then call your maternity unit for advice even if contractions have not started. Follow their instructions about assessment and travelling to your planned place of birth.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if the fluid is green, brown, foul-smelling, or heavily blood-stained; you have fresh vaginal bleeding; your baby is moving less than usual; you feel feverish or unwell; or you have severe constant abdominal pain. These features need assessment regardless of whether you have seen the mucus plug.

Call promptly if you think your waters or labour signs have started before term. Early contractions, pelvic pressure, backache, bleeding, or watery leakage can occur with preterm labour and should be assessed without waiting to see what happens next.
