Garments After Liposuction: What to Know

The prescribed garment supports swollen tissue and helps you move more comfortably while the treated area settles. Instructions differ with the body area, the operation, and the surgeon's technique, so your own discharge plan takes priority over generic schedules.

Compression applies even support across the treated tissues. Early swelling, bruising, tenderness, and small differences between sides can occur as fluid shifts and healing progresses. A garment can limit uncomfortable movement, but it does not determine the final contour by itself.

A proper fit feels firm without causing numbness, worsening pain, deep grooves, blistering, or a change in skin colour. Rolled edges and bunched seams create concentrated pressure, so flatten them whenever you dress.

Follow your team's directions about when the garment may come off for washing or bathing. Wash and dry it according to its label, and have a clean replacement available if your clinician recommends one. Check the skin, incisions, and garment edges each time it is removed.

Keep incision dressings as directed and avoid applying creams, powders, or fragranced products beneath compression unless approved. Put the garment on slowly, without pulling across healing cuts or drains. Walking as advised and drinking normally may also support recovery; the garment is not a substitute for movement instructions or follow-up visits.

Contact the surgical team promptly if compression causes persistent numbness, cold or discoloured skin, severe pressure pain, broken skin, rapidly increasing swelling, or fluid leaking through the garment. Also report spreading redness, worsening warmth, pus, fever, an opening incision, or pain that is escalating instead of settling.

Seek emergency care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or marked swelling and pain in one calf. Remove or loosen the garment only as your discharge instructions allow while arranging help, unless the team gives different immediate advice.

Ask which garment and compression level suit your treated area, how to recognise a poor fit, and when you may wash, exercise, sleep without it, or switch sizes. Clarify how dressings and drains should sit beneath it, what swelling pattern is expected, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
