What happens after taking letrozole

Do not stop or restart the medicine without speaking with the prescribing team. The intended duration and follow-up depend on why letrozole was prescribed, your response and how side effects affect daily life.

Letrozole lowers oestrogen production. That mechanism can cause hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, reduced sexual interest, tiredness, headache, aching joints or stiffness. Symptoms do not follow the same course for everyone and may fluctuate during treatment.

Lower oestrogen can also affect bone strength and cholesterol, so the care plan may include bone-health assessment, blood tests or other monitoring chosen for your circumstances. Completing the prescription does not replace ongoing cancer follow-up; appointments continue according to the original treatment plan.

Take letrozole at a consistent time and follow the instructions for a missed dose on your label or from your pharmacist. Track stiffness, flushes, sleep and mood so the team can see patterns. Regular weight-bearing movement, strength activity and a balanced diet can support muscles and bones when medically suitable.

Report side effects that interfere with walking, sleep, work, intimacy or taking the tablet. Your clinician can check for another cause and discuss symptom treatment, rehabilitation or a change in endocrine therapy. Tell the team about supplements and non-prescription products because some may not suit your medicines or health conditions.

Get urgent medical advice for new one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, severe headache, vision or speech changes, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a widespread blistering rash. These are not symptoms to save for a routine appointment.

Call emergency services for chest pain, sudden breathing difficulty, collapse, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Bring your medicine list or letrozole packaging if you can do so safely.

Ask how long your course is intended to continue, what to do after the final dose, and which follow-up appointments remain. Clarify whether you need bone or cholesterol monitoring, which contraception advice applies, and what alternatives exist if side effects become difficult to manage.
