How long immunity may last after COVID-19

Protection differs between people and can weaken over time. A new variant may also partly evade an earlier immune response, so recovery should not be treated as complete protection against catching or spreading the virus again.

After infection, the immune system develops antibodies and memory cells that can recognise the virus. This response may reduce the chance of another infection for a time and can retain protection against severe illness longer than it prevents infection itself.

The strength and duration of that response depend on factors such as immune health, vaccination history, the original illness and the variant circulating later. An antibody result cannot give an individual expiry date for protection.

Follow current UAE vaccination and respiratory-infection advice even if you have already had COVID-19. Improve ventilation in shared indoor spaces, practise hand and cough hygiene, and consider a well-fitting mask when respiratory viruses are circulating or when spending time with someone at higher risk.

If compatible symptoms return, avoid close contact with others and use the locally recommended test. A recent infection can affect how some test results are interpreted, so tell a clinician when the earlier illness occurred if you need advice.

Arrange medical review if symptoms return and you are at higher risk of severe illness, because antiviral treatment may be time-sensitive. Persistent fatigue, poor concentration, altered smell or taste, low mood, breathlessness or pain after the acute infection also deserves assessment when it disrupts daily life.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, new confusion, collapse, blue or grey lips, or persistent chest pressure. Urgency comes from the symptom itself, regardless of whether it is a first infection or a suspected reinfection.

Discuss when your next vaccine is due under current local guidance, which test is appropriate if symptoms recur, and whether your medical conditions or medicines weaken immune responses. If recovery has stalled, describe which activities now trigger symptoms and how long the problem has lasted.
