No appetite after food poisoning: recovery guidance

How the structures involved in Food Poisoning differ from normal

Short answer

A poor appetite can continue while your stomach and intestines recover from food poisoning, but keeping hydrated matters even when you do not feel ready to eat.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First priority
Replace fluid lost through vomiting or diarrhoea
Eating again
Begin with small portions and increase according to comfort
Dehydration clues
Dark urine, dry mouth, dizziness or passing very little urine

Why appetite may stay low

Nausea, abdominal cramping, diarrhoea and tiredness can make food unappealing after vomiting has stopped. Appetite should return gradually as these symptoms settle; there is no need to force a full meal straight away.

What your symptoms may indicate

Being able to keep fluids down, passing urine normally and noticing less nausea or diarrhoea are reassuring signs of recovery. Appetite can lag behind these improvements because the digestive tract remains sensitive and the body is still replacing lost fluid and energy.

Continuing vomiting, frequent watery stools or fever can prolong poor intake. Dark urine, a dry mouth, dizziness on standing, unusual sleepiness or passing very little urine suggest dehydration rather than appetite loss alone.

How to restart drinking and eating

Take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution. If nausea returns, pause briefly and try smaller amounts. Rehydration solution replaces salts as well as fluid, which can be helpful after vomiting or diarrhoea.

When fluids stay down, try small portions of familiar, easy-to-tolerate foods such as soup, rice, toast, potatoes, bananas or plain yoghurt. Increase the amount according to comfort. Rich, greasy or very spicy food, alcohol and large meals may aggravate nausea or cramping during early recovery.

Continue any prescribed medicine as directed. Do not start an anti-diarrhoeal drug or leftover antibiotic without checking with a clinician or pharmacist, especially when fever or blood in the stool is present.

When poor appetite needs medical care

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot keep fluids down, faint, become confused, have severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomit blood, pass black or bloody stool, or develop signs of marked dehydration.

Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, diarrhoea is not easing, appetite does not begin to return as other symptoms improve, or weakness prevents normal activity. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immunity, kidney disease or another significant condition should seek advice earlier because fluid loss may affect them more quickly.

What to discuss at an appointment

Tell the clinician when the illness started, what you can drink or eat, how often you are urinating, and whether there is fever, blood, severe pain or recent travel. Ask whether you need an examination, a stool test, supervised rehydration or changes to your regular medicines while intake is reduced.

Questions people ask

Do I need to eat if I have no appetite?

Do not force a large meal. Prioritise fluids, then introduce small amounts of food when nausea settles and liquids remain down.

What should I drink after food poisoning?

Water may be enough after mild fluid loss. Oral rehydration solution can also replace salts lost with repeated vomiting or diarrhoea; take it in small, frequent sips.

Can I return to my usual meals immediately?

Return gradually according to tolerance. Smaller, plainer meals may be easier at first, while rich or spicy foods may worsen digestive discomfort.
