A body rash after a fever

The relationship between fever and rash can be useful: note whether the rash appeared while the temperature was high, as it settled, or after starting a medicine. Also observe where it began, how quickly it spread, whether it itches or hurts, and whether spots flatten briefly under gentle pressure.

Chickenpox commonly presents with fever and an itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled spots at different stages. COVID-19 can include skin changes, although these vary. Cellulitis more often presents as a painful, warm, expanding area of skin and may include fever. These condition-to-symptom patterns provide context but cannot identify the cause from appearance alone.

Take clear photographs in good light and record the fever, recent illnesses, new medicines, foods, travel, insect exposure, and contact with anyone who has a rash. Avoid scratching, use loose clothing, and keep the skin clean and cool. Do not share towels until an infectious cause has been considered.

Before applying a new cream or taking an antihistamine, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether it suits the person's age, pregnancy status, conditions, and medicines. Avoid giving aspirin to a child or teenager with fever unless a clinician specifically directs it.

Seek emergency help if the rash does not fade under firm pressure with a clear glass and the person is unwell, or if there is breathing difficulty, face or throat swelling, severe drowsiness, confusion, a stiff neck, seizure, blue or grey skin, or difficulty waking. A rapidly blistering or peeling rash, especially involving the mouth or eyes, also needs immediate care.

Obtain prompt clinical advice for a baby with fever and rash, an expanding hot painful patch, dehydration, ongoing fever, worsening illness, or a rash that started after a new medicine. Keep using essential prescribed medicine unless a clinician or emergency professional advises otherwise, except when emergency allergy symptoms require immediate action.

Ask whether the pattern suggests an infection, allergy, or medicine reaction; whether the person should avoid close contact with others; and which skin care is appropriate. Show the photographs and provide the exact names and start dates of recent medicines.
