Short answer

Taste can seem reduced after a fever because an infection, nasal blockage, dry mouth, or reduced sense of smell changes flavour perception.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Flavour clue
Reduced smell often makes food seem tasteless.
Food safety
Use dates and safe storage practices rather than smell alone.
Helpful detail
Notice whether basic tastes remain detectable.

How taste and smell connect

The tongue detects basic tastes, but much of a food's flavour comes from aromas reaching the nose. Congestion or inflammation after a respiratory illness can therefore make food seem bland even when the tongue still detects sweet, salty, sour, or bitter sensations.

COVID-19 can present with altered smell or taste, sometimes alongside fever, cough, sore throat, or fatigue. A common cold can also reduce flavour when the nose is blocked. Mouth dryness, oral thrush, dental problems, smoking, and certain medicines offer other explanations, so timing and accompanying symptoms matter.

Caring for your mouth and nose

Drink regularly and maintain gentle tooth, tongue, and gum cleaning. If your nose is congested, saline nasal spray or rinsing may help, provided you use a product and method suitable for you. Avoid putting harsh substances or undiluted essential oils in the nose or mouth.

Choose foods with varied texture and temperature, and check that food is fresh rather than relying on smell alone. Do not compensate by adding excessive salt or sugar. Follow current local guidance if you have symptoms of a contagious respiratory infection, and ask a pharmacist before using decongestants.

When care is needed

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, severe confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with severe headache, new facial weakness, trouble speaking, or inability to swallow fluids. Urgency comes from these warning signs, not from loss of taste alone.

Arrange an appointment if taste loss persists after the other illness has settled, continues to worsen, affects eating or hydration, or comes with mouth pain, white patches, unexplained weight loss, recurrent fever, or a new medicine. A clinician may examine the mouth, nose, nerves, and medication list.

Details to discuss with your clinician

Describe whether smell is also reduced, which basic tastes you can detect, when the fever ended, and whether congestion or mouth changes remain. Ask if infection testing, a dental assessment, medication adjustment, or smell rehabilitation is relevant to your pattern.

Questions people ask

Does loss of taste after fever mean I have COVID-19?

COVID-19 can present with altered taste or smell, but this symptom does not establish the cause. Other respiratory infections, congestion, mouth conditions, and medicines can produce a similar change.

Should I take supplements to restore taste?

Do not start high-dose supplements without clinical advice. A clinician can first look for a deficiency or another treatable cause.

Can I still taste if my sense of smell is reduced?

You may still detect basic tastes on the tongue while losing the richer aromas that create flavour, making meals seem unusually bland.
