After fat-dissolving injections: expected changes and aftercare

The treated contour does not change instantly. The injections trigger a local inflammatory response as damaged fat cells are cleared, so early swelling can temporarily make the area appear larger. Follow the injector’s specific instructions because aftercare may differ with the product, dose and body area treated.

Bruising comes from small blood vessels disturbed by the needle. Firm or lumpy areas can reflect swelling and inflammation within the treated tissue. Altered sensation may occur when nearby nerves are irritated. These effects should generally become less troublesome rather than intensify as healing progresses.

Deoxycholic acid is used to disrupt fat-cell membranes in appropriately selected treatment areas. It is not a general weight-loss injection, and it should only be placed by a suitably qualified clinician who understands the local anatomy.

Use a wrapped cool pack for short intervals if your injector permits it, keep pressure light and avoid rubbing or massaging unless specifically directed. Leave puncture sites clean, and postpone strong acids, retinoids or other irritating products near the treated skin until it has settled. Choose activities and clothing that do not press or chafe the swollen area.

Before taking pain relief, check what is suitable with the treating clinician or pharmacist, particularly if you use blood-thinning medicine or have a bleeding disorder. Keep any planned follow-up so contour, sensation and movement can be examined before further treatment.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for increasing pain, rapidly expanding swelling, spreading redness or warmth, pus, fever, blistering, an open sore, dusky skin colour or an uneven smile after injections beneath the chin. Trouble swallowing, new weakness or persistent altered sensation also needs assessment.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait for a routine review if symptoms are progressing quickly.

Confirm which substance was injected, which tissue layer and area were targeted, and what changes are expected before review. Ask what you may apply to the skin, which activities to pause, how healing will be judged and what contact route to use if asymmetry, weakness or skin colour change develops.
