How long does implantation take after embryo transfer?

A blastocyst is already further developed and may start attaching sooner than an embryo transferred at an earlier stage. Implantation is a process rather than a single moment, so there is no reliable sensation that confirms exactly when it happens.

After transfer, the embryo must continue developing, make contact with the uterine lining and begin embedding within it. The clinic can explain whether a cleavage-stage embryo or blastocyst was transferred, which gives useful context for the expected sequence.

Light spotting or mild cramping can occur during the waiting period, but these symptoms do not prove implantation. Having no symptoms is also common and does not show that treatment has failed. Progesterone can cause breast tenderness, bloating, tiredness or discharge that overlaps with early-pregnancy symptoms.

Use progesterone and any other prescribed medicines exactly as your fertility team directed. Do not stop them because of spotting or because a home test is negative. Follow the clinic's advice on activity; ordinary gentle movement is generally compatible with recovery, while strenuous exercise may be restricted according to your treatment plan.

Take the pregnancy test on the date provided by the clinic. Testing too early can produce a misleading result, particularly when fertility medicines or a recent trigger injection affect hormone readings. Contact the clinic for instructions if a dose is missed, vomited or difficult to use.

Call your fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fever or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Seek urgent medical help for fainting, severe one-sided pain, chest pain or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether implantation may have occurred.

Ask which developmental stage was transferred, when your scheduled pregnancy test should be taken, and how long to continue progesterone. It is also useful to confirm which pain relief is suitable, what level of activity fits your protocol, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
