After effects of pre-eclampsia

Blood pressure and related symptoms can remain abnormal or become more noticeable after delivery. Most follow-up focuses on protecting the parent while the body recovers, adjusting medication and checking that blood pressure returns towards the expected range.

Headache, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, nausea, sudden swelling or breathlessness can accompany ongoing disease after delivery. Some people feel well despite raised blood pressure, which is why planned measurements matter even when symptoms have eased.

Tiredness can reflect birth, disrupted sleep, medication effects or recovery from pre-eclampsia. If birth was early or required an induction or caesarean, physical recovery and concern for the baby can add emotional strain. Follow-up also provides a chance to discuss what happened and what it may mean for a future pregnancy.

Take blood-pressure medicine exactly as prescribed and attend arranged checks. Do not reduce or stop treatment because one reading is lower; the care team may need a pattern of readings and information about symptoms before changing it. If you monitor at home, record the result, time, symptoms and missed doses according to the plan you were given.

Ask which medicines are suitable while breastfeeding, when blood and urine tests are needed, and where follow-up will happen. Gentle activity can increase as recovery allows, but severe symptoms are a reason for assessment rather than rest alone. A later review can address blood pressure, emotional wellbeing, contraception and preparation before another pregnancy.

Get urgent medical help for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, strong pain beneath the ribs, chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, collapse or feeling suddenly very unwell. These warning signs need assessment whether you are still in hospital or already at home.

Follow the maternity team's instructions for a blood-pressure reading outside your agreed range. Contact the service promptly if swelling or nausea is worsening, medicine causes troublesome effects, or you cannot obtain a planned blood-pressure check.

Bring your blood-pressure record and current medicines. Useful questions include how long monitoring should continue, what reading should trigger a call, how treatment will be reduced if appropriate, whether further tests are planned, and what care would be recommended before and during another pregnancy.
