The short answer
The injected vaccine cannot cause influenza. Symptoms such as a worsening cough, marked congestion or a persistent high fever may have another cause, including an infection that began around the time of vaccination.
Why these reactions happen
Soreness and redness come from the injection and the local immune response in the upper arm. Tiredness, headache, mild fever and muscle aches can reflect the immune system responding to vaccine components and preparing to recognise influenza viruses.
A reaction beginning after vaccination is not automatically caused by the vaccine. Timing, the symptom pattern and whether symptoms are improving help a clinician distinguish an expected response from an unrelated illness or an unusual reaction.
What you can do at home
Move the vaccinated arm gently and place a cool, clean compress over a sore injection site. Rest, drink enough fluids and choose light meals if you feel nauseated. Avoid rubbing or pressing firmly on the area.
Check whether symptoms are easing rather than focusing on a single temperature reading. Before taking paracetamol or another pain reliever, confirm that it is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions and other medicines; a pharmacist or clinician can check this.
When to seek medical care
Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening dizziness. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction and should not be watched at home.
Contact a clinician promptly if fever is high or persistent, symptoms are becoming worse instead of better, pain or swelling at the injection site is severe or spreading, or you develop weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, unusual behaviour or another symptom that concerns you.

Can the flu shot give me flu?
