After-effects and recovery following heat stroke

Because heat stroke is a medical emergency rather than simple overheating, feeling cooler afterward does not confirm that the body has recovered. Hospital assessment and an individual follow-up plan are essential.

Extreme body heat can disturb the brain, circulation, muscles, kidneys, liver and blood clotting. The effects vary with the severity of the episode and speed of cooling. Some problems are apparent immediately, while blood tests may reveal others during monitoring.

Temporary fatigue, sleep changes, muscle soreness or difficulty focusing may affect daily tasks. Lower heat tolerance can make an early return to hot conditions unsafe, especially when work, sport, medicines or an illness add further strain.

Follow the discharge plan, attend repeat examinations or blood tests, and take fluids as directed. Rest in a cool environment and avoid alcohol or strenuous activity while recovering. Do not assume that extra water alone makes exercise safe.

Return to work, training and heat exposure only after clinical clearance. The progression should be gradual and account for symptoms, organ function, fitness and acclimatisation. Review medicines with a clinician because some can affect hydration, circulation or temperature control.

Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizure, severe breathlessness, chest pain, very hot skin, or a return of altered behaviour. Move the person away from heat and begin active cooling while help is coming; do not leave them alone.

Prompt medical reassessment is also needed for repeated vomiting, worsening weakness, severe muscle pain, very dark or markedly reduced urine, new yellowing of the eyes or skin, unusual bleeding, or renewed difficulty coping with heat.
