After dissolving lip filler: care and warning signs

Follow the injector’s aftercare and allow swelling to subside before judging the result. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Hyaluronidase is used to break down hyaluronic acid filler. The injection itself can trigger local swelling and bruising, which may briefly hide the amount of correction. The lips can also look less full than expected once added volume and swelling have reduced.

Not every lump or contour change is filler, and not all filler materials respond to hyaluronidase. Scar tissue, natural anatomy, inflammation, or a different injectable may require another approach. A clinical examination is therefore more useful than repeated dissolving based only on appearance.

Use a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth if your injector recommends it, and avoid pressing or massaging the lips unless specifically instructed. Keep the injection sites clean and postpone strenuous exercise, heat exposure, alcohol, and additional lip treatments for the period in your aftercare plan.

Do not apply unapproved creams or attempt to reshape the area yourself. If you are considering more lip filler, wait for reassessment so the injector can distinguish residual product from swelling and plan placement safely. Tell the clinician about allergies, previous reactions, current medicines, and any history of cold sores.

Emergency symptoms include trouble breathing, wheezing, widespread hives, swelling inside the mouth or throat, dizziness, or collapse. These can signal a serious allergic reaction and should not be watched at home.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for escalating pain, marked colour change, cool or mottled skin, spreading redness, pus, fever, blisters, or swelling that continues to worsen. New visual disturbance, severe headache, weakness, or confusion also requires emergency assessment. Mild asymmetry without these warning signs can usually be reviewed after the early swelling has eased.

Ask what type of filler was originally used, whether more than one assessment may be needed, and when the result can be judged. Clarify which symptoms should be photographed, how to reach the clinic urgently, and when other dental, facial, or injectable treatments can safely resume.
