Skin care after chickenpox

Picking can reopen the surface and increase irritation, infection, and visible marks. Use bland, fragrance-free products until the skin barrier feels comfortable again.

Chickenpox blisters dry into crusts before fresh skin forms underneath. Flat pink, red, brown, or lighter marks can remain after the crusts fall, and their colour may be more noticeable in deeper skin tones. A colour change is different from an indented scar and often evolves gradually.

Small rough bumps appearing later are not automatically leftover chickenpox. Folliculitis presents with inflamed bumps around hair follicles, while keratosis pilaris causes persistent, firm bumps commonly felt on the upper arms or thighs.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply an unperfumed moisturiser to closed, dry skin. Keep fingernails short and choose loose clothing if friction triggers itching. Do not apply exfoliating acids, scrubs, retinoids, or bleaching mixtures to crusted or broken areas.

Once every spot has fully closed, cover exposed areas with clothing and use broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for your skin. Sun protection helps prevent healing marks from becoming more contrasting. Avoid sharing towels while any lesions remain active.

Arrange prompt assessment if a spot becomes increasingly hot, swollen, painful, or surrounded by expanding redness, or if it drains pus. A returning fever, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, severe headache, neck stiffness, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening illness warrants urgent medical care.

Get tailored advice sooner for an infant, pregnancy, weakened immunity, or extensive involvement near the eyes. Eye pain, light sensitivity, or a change in vision needs urgent assessment.

If marks remain troublesome after the skin has fully healed, ask whether they are colour changes, raised scars, or indentations. This distinction guides options and timing. Bring a list of products already used, and describe any continued itch, tenderness, or new bumps rather than treating them as scars without an examination.
