Pregnancy after a cervical stitch: recovery, follow-up and warning signs

Mild cramping, light spotting or extra vaginal discharge can occur for a few days after the procedure, but symptoms should settle rather than intensify. Keep every planned pregnancy and preterm-birth clinic appointment.

A cervical stitch, also called cervical cerclage, is placed around the cervix to help it remain closed during pregnancy when there is concern about early opening. It lowers a specific risk but does not remove the need to watch for signs of preterm labour. Your team will explain how the cervix and pregnancy will be monitored and when removal is expected. The plan can differ for a vaginal stitch and an abdominal stitch.

Rest as advised immediately after the procedure, take only pain relief approved for pregnancy and continue any prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Ask your maternity team when to resume work, exercise, lifting and sex; restrictions depend on your symptoms, stitch type and follow-up findings. Do not miss an appointment because you feel well. Keep the maternity assessment number available and note changes in pain, discharge, bleeding or tightening.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular or worsening tightenings, period-like cramps, persistent lower back pressure, bleeding heavier than spotting, a gush or trickle of watery fluid, fever, chills, or unpleasant-smelling discharge. These symptoms need assessment because they can occur with labour, ruptured membranes or infection. Seek emergency help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or feeling acutely unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what activity limits apply to you, which changes are expected after insertion, whom to call outside clinic hours and how your follow-up will be arranged. Clarify the planned timing and method of stitch removal, what happens if labour starts first, and whether your birth plan needs to change. If you have an abdominal cerclage, ask how it affects delivery.
