Aftercare Following CO2 Laser Treatment

CO2 laser energy creates controlled injury that triggers resurfacing. Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and a weeping or crusted surface can occur as the barrier repairs. The exact appearance depends on whether treatment was fractional or fully ablative and on the intensity selected.

Healing skin can remain pink and more reactive after the surface closes. Picking flakes or crusts can reopen the area and increase the chance of infection, scarring, or uneven pigmentation. Changes should generally move toward greater comfort rather than increasing pain and redness.

Wash your hands before touching the area. Cleanse only as directed, pat rather than rub, and apply the recommended ointment or moisturiser with clean hands. Use cool compresses only if your clinician permits them, and avoid ice directly on the skin.

Do not add retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, fragranced products, or unapproved antibiotic creams while the barrier is open. Avoid swimming, saunas, strenuous heat exposure, and makeup until your clinician says the surface is ready. Once permitted, use broad-spectrum sun protection, shade, and a hat to reduce pigment changes.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for pain that intensifies instead of settling, redness spreading beyond the treated border, increasing swelling, thick yellow or green discharge, an unpleasant smell, fever, or grouped blisters. Sudden darkening, pale patches, or an eye-area problem also warrants timely advice.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. If the laser was used near the eyes, new visual disturbance or severe eye pain needs urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine follow-up.

Before leaving, ask how to cleanse the exact treatment area, which ointment to apply, when dressings should change, and when bathing, exercise, shaving, makeup, and active skincare may resume. Confirm which colour or texture changes are expected for your treatment depth and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
