African malaria mosquitoes: bites, prevention, and symptoms

Only mosquitoes carrying malaria parasites can pass on the infection. The risk varies by destination, season, itinerary, accommodation, and personal health, so prevention should be matched to the actual trip rather than based on the continent alone.

A female Anopheles mosquito can acquire malaria parasites when feeding on an infected person and later transmit them through another bite. These mosquitoes commonly bite from dusk through dawn. A bite often looks and feels like an ordinary mosquito bite, so its appearance cannot confirm exposure. Malaria may present with fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, marked tiredness, nausea, or vomiting. Symptoms can begin during travel or after returning home.

Arrange a travel health consultation before departure because recommended malaria prevention depends on the exact areas visited and your medical history. If preventive tablets are prescribed, follow the schedule before, during, and after travel; do not shorten it because you feel well. Use insect repellent on exposed skin, wear long sleeves and trousers after dusk, choose screened or air-conditioned rooms where possible, and sleep under an insecticide-treated net when the sleeping area is not securely screened.

Seek urgent medical assessment for fever during or after travel in a malaria-risk area, even if you took preventive medicine. Tell the clinician every country and region visited, travel dates, and which tablets you used. Malaria can become severe quickly, and diagnosis usually requires a blood test. Call emergency services for confusion, seizures, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, extreme drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these warning signs occur.

Bring your route, accommodation plans, departure date, medication list, allergies, and relevant health conditions. Ask which preventive medicine fits your destination, when to start and stop it, what to do after a missed dose or vomiting, and whether it interacts with your regular medicines.
