Can adults get hand, foot and mouth disease?

It is a contagious viral illness that is more familiar in young children but can pass to adults, especially through close household or caregiving contact. Adults who feel well may still spread the virus.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can present with fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, painful mouth ulcers, and small spots or blisters. The rash often involves the palms and soles but may appear on the buttocks, legs, arms, or around the mouth. Not every person develops every feature.

The illness spreads through respiratory droplets, saliva, blister fluid, stool, and contaminated hands or surfaces. It is different from foot-and-mouth disease in animals. Most adults recover with supportive care, but mouth pain can make drinking difficult and lead to dehydration.

Drink frequent small amounts of cool fluid and choose soft foods if mouth ulcers hurt. Avoid acidic, spicy, or very hot food that irritates sores. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain or fever medicine, taking account of allergies, pregnancy, other medicines, and medical conditions. Antibiotics do not treat this viral infection.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet, changing nappies, or helping a child. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels, and toothbrushes; clean frequently touched surfaces; and cover coughs and sneezes. Avoid close contact with people at higher risk of severe illness while symptoms are active, and follow workplace guidance about returning.

Contact a clinician if mouth pain prevents drinking, symptoms are worsening rather than settling, fever persists, the diagnosis is uncertain, or you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Get prompt assessment for dehydration signs such as very dark urine, passing much less urine, marked dizziness, a dry mouth, or unusual drowsiness.

Seek urgent care for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, difficulty waking, breathing difficulty, a seizure, or rapidly worsening illness. A rash that does not fade when pressed also needs urgent medical assessment because other infections can cause a superficially similar rash.

Ask whether the pattern of mouth sores and rash fits hand, foot and mouth disease or needs testing for another cause. Mention recent contact with an unwell child, your ability to drink and urinate, any pregnancy, immune-suppressing condition or medicine, and the names of treatments already tried.
