What should you know about adult diphtheria vaccine?

The vaccine is usually combined with protection against tetanus and sometimes pertussis. A clinician can select the appropriate product and timing after checking previous records, pregnancy, allergies and any planned travel.

Protection from earlier immunisation can lessen over time, and some adults never completed their initial course. Catch-up vaccination does not usually require restarting a documented series; the clinician works from the valid doses already received.

Anyone with breathing difficulty, marked neck swelling or a thick throat coating after possible diphtheria exposure needs urgent medical evaluation and should avoid close contact with others while seeking instructions.

Ask which combined vaccine suits you, whether your existing doses count, when the next dose is due, and whether travel or pregnancy changes the plan. If you had a previous reaction, describe its timing and symptoms so the clinician can distinguish an expected effect from a possible allergy.
