Adult ADHD diagnosis: what to expect

Short answer
Adult ADHD diagnosis requires a structured clinical assessment of current difficulties, childhood patterns, daily impact, and other possible explanations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Assessment focus
- Symptoms, childhood history, everyday impact, and alternative explanations
- Helpful preparation
- Concrete examples, medicine list, and relevant records
- Key point
- A questionnaire supports assessment but does not diagnose ADHD by itself
How diagnosis is made
There is no single blood test or scan that confirms ADHD. A clinician asks about attention, impulsivity, restlessness, organisation, and how these patterns affect employment, education, relationships, finances, or home responsibilities. Symptoms are considered across more than one setting and in the context of earlier life.
The assessment may also explore sleep problems, anxiety, depression, substance use, medicines, thyroid problems, and other conditions that can resemble or worsen attention difficulties. With permission, school reports or observations from someone who knows you well may add useful context, but their absence does not automatically prevent assessment.
Preparing for an assessment
Write down specific recent examples, such as missed deadlines, unfinished tasks, forgotten appointments, impulsive decisions, or difficulty following conversations. Note when the pattern began, where it occurs, what makes it better or worse, and any effect on safety or wellbeing.
Bring a current medicine list and relevant medical or mental health history. Avoid changing prescribed treatment before the appointment. An honest account of caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and other substances helps the clinician distinguish overlapping effects and plan suitable care.
When to seek help sooner
Arrange an assessment when concentration, organisation, impulsivity, or restlessness repeatedly disrupts daily life. Seek urgent help if you may harm yourself or someone else, feel unable to stay safe, have severe agitation, or develop hallucinations or markedly unusual behaviour. These warning signs need immediate evaluation regardless of whether ADHD is suspected.
Useful questions at your visit
Ask which features support or argue against ADHD, which alternative causes are being considered, whether further physical checks are needed, and how the assessment process works. You can also ask what practical adjustments may help while waiting and how any confirmed diagnosis would guide treatment choices.

Questions people ask
Can an online ADHD questionnaire diagnose me?
No. A screening questionnaire can identify patterns worth discussing, but diagnosis depends on a clinician's broader assessment and consideration of other causes.
Why does the clinician ask about childhood?
ADHD is a developmental condition, so evidence that relevant patterns were present earlier in life helps the clinician interpret current difficulties.
Can anxiety and ADHD occur together?
Yes. They can coexist, and anxiety can also affect concentration, so the assessment examines the timing and character of both.
