Examples of ADT for prostate cancer

Examples of ADT include GnRH agonists, GnRH antagonists, androgen-receptor blockers, and androgen-synthesis inhibitors. Leuprolide and goserelin are agonist examples; degarelix and relugolix are antagonists. Enzalutamide, apalutamide, and darolutamide block the androgen receptor, while abiraterone reduces androgen synthesis and is given with a steroid.

An agonist initially stimulates and then suppresses the hormone pathway controlling testosterone production. This can briefly raise testosterone before it falls. An antagonist blocks that pathway directly and avoids this flare. Receptor blockers and synthesis inhibitors act at other points, so an oncologist may add one to continued testosterone suppression rather than substitute it.

A medicine's suitability is shaped by whether the cancer is hormone-sensitive or growing despite low testosterone, whether it has spread, previous therapy, swallowing needs, heart or liver health, seizure risk, falls risk, and possible interactions. The drug name alone does not reveal the full treatment plan.

Follow the label's timing and food directions exactly, especially for oral treatment. Do not replace one named ADT medicine with another because they have distinct dosing, monitoring, and interaction requirements. Record doses and clinic appointments, and check with the oncology pharmacist before adding vitamins, herbal products, or non-prescription medicines.

Attend scheduled checks for prostate-specific antigen, testosterone, blood pressure, and other blood measurements selected for your drug. Report new fatigue, hot flushes, weakness, falls, swelling, bowel changes, mood symptoms, or sexual concerns so the team can assess them in context.

Seek urgent assessment for inability to urinate, new leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, loss of bowel control, or intense worsening back pain. Sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, facial swelling, or throat tightness also warrants emergency care.

If a tablet is vomited, missed, or taken incorrectly, use the medicine-specific instructions or phone the treatment team; taking an extra dose can be unsafe. A new symptom after starting therapy deserves timely review even when it is not an emergency.

Request both the generic and brand name of your medicine, its drug group, its purpose in the combination, and any food restrictions. Clarify which effects should trigger a same-day call, which laboratory checks are planned, how bone health will be protected, and how other prescriptions should be adjusted if interactions arise.
